The Beginning of Microcosmos

Three Professionals, One Shared Vision

Three Professionals, One Shared Vision

Every project starts with an idea. But there is a special moment when that idea begins to take shape.

Before Microcosmos officially opens its doors to children and families, a lot is already happening behind the scenes.

The space is transforming, the work is progressing, and so are our ideas.

While walls are changing, rooms are taking shape and each area is gradually finding its purpose, Lenise, Flora and Alexia are already working together to imagine how Microcosmos will be experienced by children and parents.

Building a space and thinking beyond the space

Microcosmos was co-created by Alexia, an Early Childhood Educator, Lenise, a Therapist, and Flora, a Psychologist.

Our three areas of expertise and cultures are different but complementary.

And even before welcoming our first families, we are already bringing those perspectives together.

We meet, exchange ideas, question our choices and combine our professional experience to think about how each part of Microcosmos can respond to the developmental, emotional and relational needs of children, while also creating a place where parents feel welcomed, listened to and supported.

Because designing Microcosmos isn't only about deciding where a table, a shelf or a play area should go.

Every space has a purpose.

The beginning of microcosmos Chania

Thinking from a child's perspective

As the renovation progresses, we try to look at the space through children's eyes.

Where will they naturally want to explore?

Where can they move, play and create?

Where can they choose what interests them?

How can the environment encourage their autonomy and curiosity?

And where can they go when they need less stimulation, a quieter moment or simply some time to rest?

These questions guide the creation of our different spaces for free play, exploration, creativity, connection, listening, calm and rest.

Because the environment itself is part of our approach.

We want children to find different possibilities within Microcosmos: opportunities to explore and experiment, but also places where they can slow down and simply be.

Creating meaningful experiences

The same reflection goes into our workshops and activities.

We don't want to create activities simply to fill a programme.

Together, we ask ourselves what each experience can bring to children.

What can they discover?

What can they experiment with?

What can they express, develop, imagine or simply enjoy?

Our backgrounds in early childhood education, therapy and psychology allow us to look at the same idea from different perspectives and create experiences that consider the child as a whole.

Each of us brings her own professional perspective to the table.

We discuss. We question. We adjust. We create together.

And before asking ourselves “What activity should we offer?”, we prefer to ask:

“Why are we offering it, and what will it bring to the child?”

A place for parents too

But Microcosmos isn't only being created for children.

Parents are part of the story too.

Because thinking about a child's wellbeing also means considering the family and relationships surrounding them.

We are therefore imagining spaces and opportunities where parents can meet, talk, ask questions, be listened to, find professional support, connect with other families or simply take a moment to slow down.

A place for children to explore.

A place for parents to feel supported.

A place for families to connect.

Something is taking shape…

Right now, Microcosmos is still behind closed doors.

There are plans on the tables, materials arriving, spaces being transformed, ideas being discussed and many decisions still to be made.

Some things are already exactly where we imagined them.

Others are still evolving.

And some… we're keeping to ourselves for just a little longer.

Over the coming weeks, we'll gradually take you behind the scenes and reveal the spaces, the activities and some of the little details we are creating for children and families.

What will Microcosmos look like when the doors finally open?

We're not showing you everything just yet.

But one thing is certain: every day, we're getting a little closer.

This is only the beginning.

See you behind the next door…
